The disease is caused by bacteria (genus brucella) in cattle and bison,the disease curently localizes in the reproductive organs and udder.Bacteria are shed in milk or via aborted fetus.There is no way to detect infected animals by their appearance the most obvious signs is abortion.
The disease may be transmited to humans when slaughtering infected animals or when procecessing contaminated organs from freshly killed animal.Ranchers, animal managers should clean and disinfect calving areas and other places likely to become contaminated with infective materials.The best prevention is to eliminiate the brucellosis from all the animas in the area.
